This short, heartwarming animated feature was previously shown at over 180 film festivals and took home over 50 awards.

Based on a comic strip, this short film was the graduation project from the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Postproduction at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

Amazingly, it was produced by just 10 people.

That just proves how far digital production skills and software have come in the past 10 years. When I was in school back at the turn of the millennium (which wasn’t really that long ago…) it would have taken a much larger team of professional animators months to create a video with graphics which weren’t even this good. And that ignores the days of waiting just for computers to render each frame on dedicated workstations.

Nowadays, software capable of such feats can run on almost any modern laptop, and is available for less than a few hundred dollars. This has opened up the art of special effects and animated film-making to a much wider audience than ever before. They’re also becoming easier to use for non-professionals, allowing anyone to try it out for themselves.

But it still takes a creative mind to come up with an idea which can make people have an emotional response to the art.

And I’m not afraid to admit that the video above made me shed a quick tear.

Enjoy.
