I love Game of Thrones.
It’s almost a perfect TV show, with a wonderful blend of story, visuals, fantasy and characters. And messy, visceral violence. Few episodes have showed quite how violent and yet realistic war can be as the wonderful penultimate episode of Season 6, called the “Battle of the Bastards”, where Jon Snow’s army takes on the much larger forces of the evil Ramsay Bolton. Not to spoil the story, but it is a visual masterpiece of gut-wrenching action, and was apparently the most expensive episode the show ever made, costing an estimated $10 million over 25 days and using 600 crew members, 500 extras, 70 horses and one giant. Now, the team at iLoura, the special effects team from Australia who turned all of those figures into the episode we all saw, have released a behind the scenes video of how you create an army of thousands while keeping real deaths to a minimum. Watch the video above to see how the creativity of a story is turned into a blockbuster. You’ll feel like you’re right there, drowning in corpses alongside Jon Snow. Poor guy, he knows nothing about CGI.
